Using Rune Stones for the art of divination is called Rune Casting and requires like most games for you to have a playing field to cast onto. This is a piece of cloth chosen to be only used for this purpose. Folded and put away with the stones when not in use. It does not have to be big as long it can allow you the room to cast your stones onto it.

A bag to keep and draw your stones from is also essential. The bag needs to be big enough for you to place your hand into and choose the stone from. All of the crystal Rune Stone Set sold on Energy In Balance come with a bag that has the name of the Runes on it

You will also need a set of Rune Stones. These sets typically have 25 stones, 24 of the stones will have ancient Norse Glyhs (symbols) on them and the final stone will be blank. These are typically made from wood, glass, or crystals. You can make your own set or purchase one that you feel drawn to.

Once your stone/stones are drawn you will need a way to interpret them. I have put together a page with the meanings of each stone here to assist you. Rune Stone Meaning Information. Rune Stones are used to get clarification or advice about the past present and future. You cast the Runes and then interpret their meaning.

I will go through three ways to cast the Rune Stones here. They will all require the same setup and steps to prepare.

Preparation Steps for a Casting

Pick your time and area.

Time, day and moon cycle can also come into play to help strengthen your reading. However, most people will go on when it ‘feels’ right to Cast the Runes particularly when beginning.

Find a peaceful spot that is facing north. This will need to be a quiet area to assist you to clear your mind and focus. By facing north you are enhancing your connection with Odin and the other Norse Gods, this is important for the strength of the Cast but not essential.

Prepare your area.

Once you have your spot and time and are ready to Cast your Stones. Sit it in a comfortable position and place your Rune Casting cloth to the north in front of you. Your cloth needs to be big enough to hold the casting. A large tablecloth size or bigger will be a great size. Remember that this cloth is only to be used for Casting the Runes and will be put away with the stones when not in use.

You are now set to Cast your Rune Stones.

Odin’s Rune – one stone reading

This is a great, quick, and easy way to cast the Runes as it only involves the casting of one stone. I have found it is mainly done in times of stress or where you need a quick answer or overview of the situation. The steps above are not always essential in this casting but can be helpful. This one can be done without cloth placed and facing any direction. All you need are your stones and a quiet place to draw one stone.

I have found myself sitting at my east-facing desk trying to work my way through an issue that is foremost in my mind. Taken a deep breath, reached into the stone bag, and found the right one. When you do this casting you usually have the focus and intent in your mind already and be asking for a quick overview or answer to the situation. Once the stone is cast you will need to look up the meaning and interpret it.

This casting is also a great one to do in honor of special occasions. At this time the preparation steps should be in place. I have found the single casting helpful at times like New Year, Summer and Winter Solstice, births, deaths and any other significant time.

Three Rune Cast

The Three stone Casting has been in use for over 2000 years and is a great way to answer all but the most complicated situations.

Following the preparation steps above then have the situation or issue that you want to address clearly in your mind. Some people find it more helpful to write it down for clarity and focus. I then will say:

With light and protection, I evoke the power of the stones to show me the answers I need to progress forward. Then read/say your question.

You then select three stones and place them on your cloth from right to left. You can also say the words and question between each individual cast if it helps to focus your intent.

Stone one is an Overview of the situation and the first Rune cast and placed. This will help you clarify what your situation is.

The second Rune and center stone is the Challenge you will face in the situation.

The third and last Stone drawn in the casting is the Action Rune which allows you to see what course of action you should take.

Once all three stones have been cast. Take the time to interpret the information given to help you clarify the situation and what you should do. I have also found that taking a photo of the specific casting can be helpful in moving forward before sending my gratitude for the reading and packing my stones away.
